Alienator-The proposal for DOLMUS project by Yenyitzu:

-The Concept of Alienator:

This performance is a temporary spectacle for the city, a excursion from Amsterdam to Haarlem. When it is end up in the park next to Dolhuys museum, it creates a specific double space there.

Alienator here describes the condition of people who alienated from the others. As outsiders for a stranger city, they sometimes are given some surface identity from local people, such as “tourist”,”immigrant”,“refugee” ...There is more than one time,as a “Asia looks” girl, people ask me “Are you a hooker?” or “How much are you?”. This experience reminds me think of in which kind of view I would be regarded as another identity.

The experience of visiting Dolhuys museum, offers me to rethink of what is normal? In the guide book of the museum said ”...We would like to encourage our visitors to think about the boundary between crazy and normal and question the representation of ‘madness’...””...Het Dolhuys wants to bridge the gap between the mental healthcare sector and general public.... ”. On the route of visiting the museum, what is mostly interested me is: audience have to open many doors, there is always something hidden behind the closet, or another room. Through the action of open a door, people can experience the extra space inside the space.

Alienator would happen in a beautiful park just next to the Dolhuys museum, there are various kind of birds, gooses, gulls....peacefully live together. It somehow shows quite poetic moment for me, since the museum tries to explore the capacity of people understanding each others. There is a small isolated island in the center of the lake in the park, which is the place I’ll perform my work. There is no road for human being walking directly to it, just the animals could swim or fly there. I would look this island as the hidden closet in Dolhuys museum. I’ll work with the distance in-between the island and normal land in the park.

Psychiatry is a live topic. One in five Dutch people are affected by a mental problem. This does not mean we are any crazier than the rest of the world. We all know someone affected by depression, burnout or Alzheimer’s. Thanks to mental health care taking up a more prominent position in society, people with psychiatric problems have become a more noticeable presence in everyday life. Yet still not enough is known about psychiatry and people with psychiatric problems often face prejudice. We would like to encourage our visitors to think about the boundary between crazy and normal and question the representations of ‘madness’.

Experience the world of madness in the Dolhuys. Meet madmen and lunatics, or clients as they are known today, in our interactive museum and find out how the Netherlands has dealt with madness throughout the centuries.
